A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah is his story of fleeing the rebels. At age 12 Ishmael and his brothers were forced to flee the attacking rebels. At the age of 13 he had been separated from his brothers and picked up by the government army. At the age of 16 Ishmael was picked up by UNICEF and taken to a rehabilitation center.

Freetown is the Capitol of Sierra Leone and is also the second to last town that Ishmael goes through on his journey.
